Have you ever had one of those mornings when you woke up with a surge of energy and enthusiasm (as opposed to days when you wake up with lethargy and depression).
Did you ever have a morning when the birds are chirping (they always chirp in the morning, you are too groggy to notice) and the sun is shining brightly (it usually does in hot climates and often in colder ones).
I woke up like this today, feeling I could do anything in the world I put my mind to. (This has happened to me in the past and lasts for a variable number of hours). So what did I do with this unbound energy and enthusiasm?
I cleared my fridge.
Why, you may ask?! Why didn’t I use my energy and enthusiasm for doing something creative like writing, for instance? Well, writing is something I enjoy doing, and I can do it even when I am not feeling so good. I can then write to cheer myself up.
Clearing the fridge is something I hate doing. Chucking unused or expired cartons of juice or yoghurt, discarding that box of cherries that I thought the kids would love but didn’t touch. These are the mundane things I hate doing and therefore keep putting off.
The point I am trying to make here is that we human beings are not machines (really! you roll your eyes). We do not have constant levels of energy, enthusiasm and creativity. The levels of our various talents and abilities ebb and flow.
It is importnt that we recognise these fluctuations in our mind, body and spirit and put them to good use.
1. Do something that you have been putting off for a long time.
This could be something really mundane like tidying a closet or sorting out clothes to give away. It could be an awkward but neccessary visit or phone call.
2. Kill your to-do list.
If, like me, you are a list-maker and have a to-do list for every day (I wrote a post on To-do Lists, you can read it here), today is the day to attack it with fervour. Give yourself the challenge of doing your alloted tasks quicker than usual.
This will give you a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. It will also give you an extra chunk of “me time” to enjoy
3. Make a Plan
Plan your day, week, month , life, whatever. While you are feeling enthusiastic and energetic, you will make better plans.
4. Evaluate and Assess
This is a good time to evaluate and assess your goals, your achievements, your health and financial status. It is also a good idea to assess your plans for the future.
5. Make a list of at least 3 good things.
These could be 3 good things in general or 3 good things in your life.
It could be 3 good things that you have done.
Or 3 good things that you like in other people.
When you are feeling good, it is easier to see the good in yourself, in others and in your surroundings.
Display this list if you can –on your mirror, or inside your closet, anywhere that you can see it . Otherwise, just keep it in your purse/wallet, phone or computer.
Whenever you have one of those less than perfect days, take out this list and read it.
It will help. I promise!

Thank you.
It’s amazing how much one’s level of energy and positivity can vary.
So it’s a good idea to make use of it when at peak levels

There is nothing as satisfying as getting through a to-do list. The combination of practical and positive here is great.

This is exactly what I wanted to read. Mechanical routine needs to be broken by some energetic spells and other than the ordinary stuff can be done during those spells.

I remember my mother telling me to eat the veggies I didn’t like first to get them off my mind and off my plate – it worked ! I pretty much try to face life in the same way: do the distasteful tasks first so they’re not weighing me down. I said I try. i don’t always succeed, especially when my energy levels are low. This is a wonderful post and very good advice – I’m with you on this one.

Thank you. Your appreciation means a lot to me as I really admire your work.
I share your mother’s attitude too. Best to tackle difficult or less pleasant things first and also when one has the most energy and enthusiasm.

I have never understood how as soon as I strike one item off my to-do list another two mysteriously appear on the bottom.
