Four natives of the Isle of Guernsey are caught breaking the curfew during the Nazi occupation. The youngest and bravest of them is quick witted enough to tell the German guards a tall tale about attending a literary meeting; an activity condoned by the German authorities.Hence a book club with the unlikely name of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is born.
Fast forward to 1946 London. A popular young author Juliet Ashton (played by Lily James), receives a letter from a member of the Guernsey Society. Juliet is so intrigued by the Society that she interrupts her book tour to go to Guernsey for the weekend.
At Guernsey, she falls in love with the island as well as the Society members whom she begins to see as family. The impetuous young founder of the Society, Elizabeth McKenna is however missing. Juliet soon finds herself compelled to unravel the secret of Elizabeth’s disappearance.
Her American fiance, Mark (Glen Powell) and publisher Sydney (Matthew Goode) keep pressing Juliet to return to London but she stays in Guernsey, researching its past. She stumbles across many of the islanders’ secrets.
All through the story run flashbacks from World War II. The pathos of war and the atrocities committed by the Nazi forces are shown against the scenic beauty of Guernsey.
In addition to the bitter sweet story, viewers are treated to beautiful cinematography. A starry sky, sunsets, picturesque cottages and coastline all add to the film’s entertainment value. Downton Abbey fans will be happy to see four of the actors from the series in this movie.
