How to name your blog

QQ: It’s All In The Brand Name right?

So, how did you come to select your blog’s brand name and your running tag? What processes went into the selection process? Does the name of your blog cover who you are, what you write about?

Rory of the popular blog  A Guy Called Bloke and K9 Doodlepip!  keeps asking bloggers insightful questions. As part of these question series, I have learned a lot about the blogging technques of  many expert bloggers. This time Rory wants to know about how we came to give our blogs the names we did. His own tag line is : We Each Have A Story To Tell. As you can see above he also wants to know about our tag lines.

When I first startyed blogging, I knew that I wanted to write about a lot of different subjects inspite of all the prevalent blogging advice to “niche down”. So I wanted my blog name to convey a variety of different topics. I thought about “Kaleidoscope” and Pot Pourri” among others, but these names seemed quite dated, even though they conveyed the sense of diversity that I wanted.

Around that time, I discovered Salted Caramel brownies and became a fan of the flavour. It also seemed to embody the concept of my blog that I wanted to put across : some sweet and some salty topics.

As for my tag line ” A light hearted look at life” it encompasses my general attitude towards things. I believe that life is too short to be serious all the time, and this is the tone that I try to maintain in most of my blog posts.

Rory’s questions set me thinkinng about what points one should keep in mind while naming a blog. I came up with a few ideas, and they might help someone who is in the process of finding a suitable title.

Your blog name is very important.

Shakespeare said in Romeo & Juliet :

“What’s in a name?

that which we call a rose

By  any other name would smell as sweet” ,

But not so for your blog. The name of your blog is extremely important because it is the thing that is going to attract people to click on it and reach your site. Your blog name is what will draw people in and evoke enough curiosity to make them read your About page.

 

It should showcase the idea behind your blog.

As creator of your own blog and content, you might feel that you can name it anything you wish. It would be absurd however, if your name and content had no connection with each other. For example, if the name of your blog is “Sugar & Spice” and you are posting articles about software or finance, it just wouldn’t make sense would it? 

Tales from the mind of Kristian is quite an appropriate title for a blog that has a lot of flash fiction as its content.

 

It should reflect some of your personality

Although this is not essential, it is nice if your blog name lets some of your personality shine through. For example, blogger Sadje of Keep It Alive, is a very dynamic kind of person. This is reflected in her blog name and in her writing.

Tnen there are bloggers like Amanda Cade, whose name forms her blog title or Paula Light, part of whose name is in her blog title Light Motifs II.

 

A catchy title is a good idea.

As I said in the beginning, your blog’s name is what induces people to check it out. So the importance of an interesting title cannot bre overemphasized. Blogger Fandango’s title This, That & the Other is an example of “catchiness” that also shows that he covers more than one topic.

 

The name should niether be too long nor too difficult to spell

Potential readers will be typing in your blog title. If it is too long or complicated, this can be a deterrent to visitors. This is why I rejected the name “Kaleidoscope”. Just as a name that is a mouthful, is hard to pronounce, a name that is hard to spell is difficult to type.

Most importantly : you should like it.  

Your blog name should be one that you like from the bottom of your heart. If you are not passionate about the name, you might not so motivated about creating great content.
