Five Important Reasons Why You Must Eat Watermelon This Summer

“Watermelon is a fruit that you can eat, or drink. You can even use it to wash your face”.
I don’t exactly remember where I read this, but I agree with it absolutely and completely. Watermelon is the most versatile of fruit and each part of it can be used. You can eat it on its own, or combine it with other fruit and vegetables to create a multitude of appetizing and healthful salads.

You can drink it in smoothies or slush or fruit infused water. You can even wash your face with it. The witty person I quoted above was not far wrong: watermelon finds its way into many scrub creams and facial or body washes.
It has countless uses but I still feel that the best one is to eat it. Here are some reasons why:

1. It is chock full of vitamins and other good stuff.
This wonderful fruit is a powerhouse with its content of Vitamins A, B1, B6 and C. It also contains the cancer fighting substance called lycopene. It also has anti-oxidants, natural chemicals that help ward off the wear and tear associated with aging and inflammation. It contains the anti-oxidant beta-carotene which looks after our skin, eyes and immune system.

2. It is the dieter’s best friend.
You can eat your fill of the lovely fresh red flesh and still keep your figure. The lovely watermelon due to its high water and fibre content works out to only 40 calories per cup of fruit. This makes it the best summer dessert for dieters.

3. This fruit can keep you hydrated
With its water content of 92%, you can stay well hydrated by eating watermelon even if you are not drinking enough water.
Blend it into a smoothie or slush or add it to infused water; you can drink it as well as eat it.

4.Surprise, surprise! It is safe for diabetics.
with loads of soluble fibre and a low calorie content,this fruit can be consumed daily by diabetics-two or three slices per day.  It is not just safe, it is additionally beneficial for diabetics since it increases the insulin response.

5. Watermelon is just sooooo yummy.
In my book this is the best reason of all.



Choose fruit that is fully ripe: a lovely ruby red. The ideal content of lycopene and beta-carotene can only be found in the fully ripe fruit.


If you eat a watermelon seed, a whole fruit will not grow in your belly. Seeds are high in protein, potassium, vitamin B and good fats. Use them in granola bars or toast them and sprinkle them on cereal, just as you would sunflower seeds.

Don’t throw out the rind. In some Asian countries, the rind is cut into pieces and cooked or stir-fried like any vegetable.


Although everyone is familiar with the lovely red colour, a watermelon variety with bright yellow flesh can also be found. Other varieties with orange, white, and even green flesh can be found.

Japanese farmers are growing square watermelons. This is not a joke; the fruit is grown inside square glass containers(cubes) and it takes the shape of the container. This was done initially for ease of stacking and storage but the novelty value is greater, the square variety selling for twice as much as the natural round one.


Classified as both fruit and vegetable (like the tomato), watermelon is the official vegetable of the state of Oklahoma, USA.

In China and Japan, watermelons are considered a good hostess gift: you can turn up at a party bearing this large green fruit instead of flowers (it will be much more useful).



Turn it into a keg/juice dispenser: 

Cut a hole in the fruit, big enough for a stick blender to go through. Now give it a whizz a few times. Stand it up on a support and fix a simple plastic tap or spigot to the side. Voila! You have a keg full of lovely red juice on tap.

Disposable bowl : 

Cut it in half, scoop out the flesh and you have a disposable bowl for salad or dessert. Of course, the flesh can be added to either dessert or salad.

Seed Spitting Contest:

I personally found this quite disgusting. Watermelon seed spitting contests are held in many parts of the world. People spit them out with force and see how far they can make them go. The current world record is held by Jason Schayot at 75 feet 2 inches and remains unbroken since 1995.


Food Art: 

The smooth green rind can be carved into lovely patterns with a pocket knife. Combined with the beautiful contrasting colours of the cut surface this makes for great food art that can be seen decorating celebration buffets.

Each part of this lovely fruit is useful. The flesh can be used for eating and drinking and skincare. The seeds and rind at edible too.
You can have a lot of use out of it.

  1. The taste of the watermelons in NL is not very good…some have actually tasted like tomatoes…believe it or not.. But when I do get back to Greece I will definitely do so..:)

      1. No problem. Marketed as seedless, in that they don’t have the large black seeds one normally assocaites with watermelon. There are seeds, but very small. You might almost call them immature seeds I guess. Nevertheless, still pretty tasty all the same.
