“I am getting married,” Pam said in a hushed voice to her colleague and best buddy, Lynn; “but keep it to yourself for now. Jim and I haven’t even told our parents yet.”
“Don’t worry ! I won’t tell anyone,” Lynn reassured her, and later told her neighbour, who told her boyfriend, who told his buddy, who told his girlfriend, who told her sister Anna.
Lynn hadn’t told anyone, just her neighbour who wasn’t just anybody!
Of course the story got more interesting, being embellished in each retelling.
Pam got a real shock a couple of days later when her old school friend Anna called her, sounding deeply conceerned,.”Oh Pam, I just heard that you are in the middle of a really messy divorce; if you need any moral support, I’m always there for you.”

Brilliant! That’s how the rumor mills work! 😂

Oh oh oh…so that’s what it’s called. This is why none of my friends know each other, so I don’t care who they tell. Call the newspapers! 🙂
Here’s a thought. I wonder what would happen if a person told their friend something, and then said: “Please tell everyone, because I don’t have the time. Thanks!”

Good idea !
Must try that sometime.
But jokes apart, I am blessed with very discreet friends and colleagues.

Your story could be a true one! Stories do sometimes get embellished beyond recognition of the original. You did give me a chuckle, though. Thanks for linking to In Other Words.
