Vestiges of a glorious past.

It was hard to imagine the splendour of this passageway as it had been a hundred years ago : its floor lined by a thick pile carpet, its ceiling hung with a succession of chandeliers that shone on the aristocracy making their way to the ballroom beyond.

Now the passageway and the ballroom, like the rest of the castle, were in ruins , looted and pillaged in the name of successive revolutions that had only lined the pockets of opportunists.

Tourists, archaeologists and historians found it difficult to reconcile these crumbling walls with their glorious past.
