Pumpkin Spice Latte
Coffee Chronicles — Part Four
A series documenting the ongoing saga of mankind’s relationship with coffee.
The pumpkin spice latte is trending now. You can see it in most lists of autumnal favourites. It is fast becoming as much of a seasonal culture icon as the pumpkin itself. Every October and November, pumpkins abound not just on grocer’s shelves but all over. They can be seen adorning clothes and stationery.
Pumpkin jack o’ lanterns are an essential part of Halloween celebrations. No wonder then that the most popular fashion colour every year is ‘pumpkin’ (or what used to pass for orange before).
It is hardly surprising then, that nearly everyone’s favourite flavoured coffee in the fall is the pumpkin spice latte. People can be seen braving the elements, holding tall pumpkin spice lattes. Check out the autumnal favourites in blogs, vlogs and YouTube videos and you will find Pumpkin Spice Latte on every list.
Pumpkin pie fans must be over the moon. It is a bit like having a slice of pie with your favourite coffee, only in one cup.
Taken apart, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is:
- Brewed espresso
- Steamed milk
- Sugar
- Pumpkin pie spice sauce.
- Whipped cream
- Pumpkin spice topping: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove.
Although sales of this coffee are going through the roof these days, not everyone likes it. My friend Shahida found it “too sweet and too heavy” but she says she ought to have told them to hold the sugar. Her final verdict, “can’t say I will order it again.”
Another friend, Mushi found it, “ over-rated—overly sweet, overly spiced and overly priced—left my taste buds under whelmed.’ Blogger Sadje, however, is a big fan; it is one of her favourite things about autumn.
As for me, I am not a big fan of specialty coffee. My tea and coffee tastes are rather conservative. I prefer to eat my pie and drink my coffee.

I have had a couple. I prefer the gingerbread latte…but that is also very sweet. It has to be really cold outside and I have to have been on a long walk and feel I need something warm and sweet for me to order one. They are a real treat, when I am in need of something naughty but nice and full of spice.

I’ve never tried it – it really doesn’t appeal to me. I had the gingerbread latte years ago from a friend’s recommendation and it was awful! I’ve never been tempted to waste my money again 🙂

I used to have a mocha with hazelnut syrup and an espresso martini is divine! These days I stick to latte or cappuccino but that’s due to dietary restrictions.

Sorry I totally missed the point of the bottom part of your post. I don’t feel I should vote as I have never tried it so it’s not a valid opinion, lol. However, if I must, going on my experience with the gingerbread latte, it’s a PSL no!
Now I wish I’d written that delayed post on coffee in the 18th century. Did you know that coffee houses were as popular then as they are now? It was a very masculine environment, men would meet and (to use a term that is probably out of context) ‘put the world to rights’, transact business and important meetings such as inquests would be held in such establishements.
It was a luxury item, so coffee was definitely out of the price reach for the poorer people in society and only available to those with enough money to purchase the imported beans.

PSL – No. But then a little bit of pumpkin in anything goes a long way. I am doing 3 desserts for Thanksgiving and a pumpkin pie will not be one of them.

Sure. Pecan pie and lemon meringue pie are our traditionals and an experiment with something that claims to be the original version of the banana pudding from the vanilla wafers box. It just sounded good.

I like pumpkin and the smell of pumpkin spice, but the heavy latte or coffee combinations I find too rich and sweet. I know people go goofy for them. They can have mine. I much prefer a nice strong black coffee.
