Mushrooms and rainbows are equally rare in my part of the world. This confers on them an almost magical impression.
Maybe they seem magical to me because I grew up on a surfeit of Enid Blyton ‘s stories. Fairies, pixies, elves and goblins live in mushrooms in her stories. If I remember correctly, Big Ears, a kindly gnome, who features prominently in her Noddy series, lives in mushroom house.
Then there are all the garden ornaments and garden seats shaped like mushrooms that you can find in garden centres, homes and parks. Mushrooms, particularly the red and white kind in the picture above, are cheery and fun.
