If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make them?
We fear the consequences of mistakes. That is why we fear to make them. When we jump across a puddle we are careful not to make an error in how far we should jump because we know that we can get wet as a result of a mistake. Of course, the lesson will be to make a better estimate of distance in the future.
How do we know that pleasure is good and pain is bad?
Scientifically speaking, there are different centres in our brain for pain and pleasure which respond to these stimuli so that we experience the respective emotion. You could also argue that these are partly conditioned responses that we learn as we grow. One of the first thing a child learns is that fire is hot aas a result of repeated warnings by elders.
What problem or situation did TV / movies make you think would be common, but when you grew up you found out it wasn’t?
I grew up in a small family and would envy the large family get togethers over Christmas and Thanksgiving that were very popular in Hollywood movies. ” The more the merrier” seemed to be the principle. When I grew up and had the chance to be a part of some large celebrations I woke up to some harsh realities. Large family gatherings took a lot of planning, effort, diplomacy and tact. They sometimes became acrimonious and quite stressful too.
If you drive, do you speed when no one is watching? Have you ever run a red light late at night on purpose, particularly if it doesn’t seem to change very quickly? If you don’t drive, what minor law may you have broken?
If there is no one else on the road, I might be tempted to exceed the speed limit provided no cops or speed cameras are around. Very early in the morning or very late at night, again when there is none or hardly any other traffic on the road I just might run a red light. Come on, I’m only human!
