Blogging Insights # 29 – Your Comments Section

When I first launched my blog, I didn’t really expect anyone other than my mother and a couple of friends to read my posts. Imagine my surprise when I got several favourable comments on my first few posts. I was over the moon; not only had peple read what I had written but they had actually left feedback. Ever since, the comments section is one of my favourite parts of my own and others’ blogs.

How important is the comments section to your blog?

The comments section is a very important part of my blog. It is here that I get the reassurance that what I am posting is good enough to be read. This is also where I find feedback and inspiration. Many chats and discussions sometimes ensue in the coomments section of my own as well as other blogs and I have learned a lot from these. I have made many lasting friendships as a result of comments.

 

Do you read the comments on other people’s blogs/posts?

Oh yes ! This is one of my favourite things to do. I am often pressed for time and cannot read as many posts in the reader as I would like to. However, whenever I read a post, I always go through the comments on the post. I enjoy points raised by readers and the way the author replies to them. This discussion can add a lot of value to the original post. This is true only of meaningful comments. Comments like “Great post” or “Nice one” can make the blogger happy but are not particularly useful.

 

Spam comments and spammers : we all hate them. How do you identify spam comments?

Some spammers are quite obvious in that they are advertising things for sale and usually leave links to their websites in your comments section. Others are more subtle and leave a “formula” type of comment like “This is very useful information etc.” As a newbie blogger, I used to approve such comments but soon got wise when it happened once too often.

 

Have you ever “approved” negative comments?

Surprisingly, in more than two years of blogging I have come across only one negative comment. I had written in one of my posts that I have always put family before my career and this man berated me asking me if I was for real or was I just being sarcastic? At first I thought of approving this comment and answering that I had my own priorities and the right to make my own choices. Then I thought against it; I still wonder if this was the right thing to do.
