Gothic in Greenland

“Gothic” is something that I associate with the colour black and with all things dark and gloomy. Greenland is a place where all is snow and sparkling white. To my mind then, Gothic and Greenland are poles apart, as different as chalk from cheese.

“Gothic” could also signify Gothic Romances such as “The Mysteries of Udolpho” by Ann Radcliffe. Jane Austen refers to this novel in her book “Northanger Abbey” in which the heroine Katharine Morland is a great fan of the genre.

Gothic romances do not seem to have much connection with Greenland. These novels, as well as other books, could help pass the long days that they have in that part of the world. What do you think ?
