10. Regretful happenings

This year 2020, was the beginning of a new decade of the 21st century. With technological advancements like artificial intelligence, nanotechnology becoming household words we were all set for conquering the universe as well as our own mortality. We were also developing a social conscience (albeit a forced one due to difficulties caused by global warming). Most of the world was banning single use plastics as well as non renewable energy and looking for sustainable resources.

We seemed all set for a good year if not a decade. Then the unthinkable happened. A deadly virus that was at first confined to China spread across the world. The COVID -19 pandemic was something no one had experienced in their lifetime.

As if this health disaster was not enough, something else happened. George Floyd was brutally assaulted and killed in the United States. This began the “I can’t breathe” and “Black Lives Matter” movement which spread across the world. The death of George Floyd showed us that racism still exists in this so-called civilised world.

These regrettable happenings made the first half of 2020 a sad one for us. Let’s hope the next half brings us the hope we had for this year.
