Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? is one of Agatha ‘s stand alone books meaning that it does not feature one of her famous detectives. The sleuthing is left to two “bright young things” who also become romantically involved.
Apart from this, (fans will not be disappointed) the murder takes place in a small town. A country house is involved. There is subterfuge and impersonation. Several favourite Agatha Christie motifs are employed.
Additionally, there is a sanatorium run by a sinister looking doctor. His beautiful young wife seems scared and persecuted, adding another twist to the tale. Most enigmatic are the words “Why Didn’t They Ask Evan’s?” uttered by the victim before he died.
Now this one I remember, perhaps because of its ending. Or maybe because I read it many times.
