5 Things Tuesday — Food Fads You Absolutely Hate

Every Tuesday, here on 5things , I ask you to tell us about 5 of your favourite things based on a theme. This week, instead of asking you to name things you love, I want you to list food fads trends that you hate. Here is my list :

Avocado

Articles on health, food, and healthy food are full of the virtues of this fruit. It is supposed to be keto friendly and chock full of vitamins. Try as I might, I have not been able to acquire a taste for it.

Tres Leches Cake / Three Milk Cake

For the uninitiated, this is a sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk : condensed milk, evaporated milk , and cream. Although very fashionable in my part of the world these days, I just cannot stand soggy cake. Rich fruit cake, chocolate sponge, banana bread, walnut pie : now those are what I call cake.

Almond Milk / Soy Milk

Unless you have lactose intolerance or some kind of allergy why even consider these? It is very fashionable to eat dairy free these days but unless there is a medical condition, why give up on a good source of vitamins and calcium that is also flavorful. I have tried almond milk and lived to regret it. With soy milk, I have not even made the attempt.

Green Drinks

Again, these are very fashionable these days for diet and detox. Smoothies can take any kind of green : spinach, kale, wheatgrass. I pass on all of the above, the only green I can have as juice or smoothie is kiwi fruit.

Bullet Proof Coffee

Bulletproof coffee is a high-calorie coffee drink intended to replace breakfast. It consists of 2 cups (470 ml) of coffee, 2 tablespoons (28 grams) of grass-fed, unsalted butter, and 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 ml) of MCT oil mixed in a blender. It was originally promoted by Dave Asprey, the creator of the Bulletproof Diet.

This coffee is also part of the keto diet and I got to know about it via a friend who was on this diet. I considered it very brave of her to endure it and could not be persuaded to try it.

DISCLAIMER: Today’s post is a bit of a rant and may offend some people who like these food trends. My apologies if I have given offence, but these are my personal preferences.

What are 5 food fads that you love to hate? I would love to know.

  1. Here are my five. Although two of them can’t be counted as ‘fads’. That coffee you mentioned sounds disgusting. I could NOT swallow it, and if I did manage to drink a cup of it, I’m sure I’d be throwing up in short order. There’s so much fat in that (butter in coffee? Oh goodness me!! ) that my non-existent gall bladder would have a fit. As it does with any overly greasy substance. And that cake? I’m with you. Why ruin a good cake by sogging it up? I don’t like lava cake for that very reason either. So your choices aren’t so strange. But avocados? I’ll take your share any time! You can have my onions! Fair trade!
