5 Things Tuesday — 5 Ways You Enjoy Apples

There are so many ways to enjoy apples. I remember an unusual one from my childhood. This was curry made with mutton and cooking apples. It was a salty and spicy dish with pieces of mutton and tender slices of apple in a thick gravy. You ate it with chapatti for lunch or dinner. It is so long ago that I had it that I have even forgotten the taste. I have not seen cooking apples in the shops for as long as I can remember. Growing them must have gone out of fashion as the market declined.

Apples on their own

Nothing beats an apple as a portable snack. You can have it at any time of day as dessert or as a small meal on the go.

In the world of fiction, Agatha Christie ‘s character Mrs. Oliver is a crime novelist who loves eating apples. You can see her helping Hercule Poirot catch murderers in Halloween Party, Elephants Can Remember and several other books. Jo March, the heroine of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women is another fictional author who munches on apples as she reads or writes.

Apple pie a la mode

This is such a treat with the pie warm and the ice cream soft serve. A large cappuccino to accompany it, and I am in heaven.

Apple crumble

This is a very easy dessert, so easy that even I can make it. Sliced apples flavoured with cinnamon and brown sugar form the base . The crumble topping of flour, butter and chopped nuts is nice and crisp. I like to keep my topping thin and focus on the apples. This is a great after dinner treat but is equally popular at afternoon tea.

Apple and cinnamon overnight oats

This is my healthy alternative to apple pie and apple crumble. You just layer quick cooking oats, milk, chopped apples, chopped nuts and a pinch of cinnamon in a mason jar. Leave it overnight in the fridge. In the morning you have a portable breakfast that tastes almost like apple crumble.

Apple Juice

Fresh apple juice is so refreshing. I don’t mind it out of a box either as long as it is thick and unsweetened. I am not a fan of the clear sweet liquid sold as apple “nectar”.

There are so many varieties of apples and so many ways you can enjoy them.
