I would say that it depends entirely on the type of writing you are discussing.

I agree, but I took it for granted that Doctorow was talking about fiction. What do you think?

I haven’t had much blogging time this week, but I do intend to write a longer explanation. I will say, though, that as far as fiction is concerned, it definitely should apply.
