TODAY’S QUOTE

” A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die without putting a word to paper.” K. D. White

MY THOUGHTS

When I first launched my blog in 2018 I was at a very busy phase in my life. Having taken a sabbatical from work to look after my family full time I was doing a lot. Since I love to write, I started the blog as a part of “me time” or “self care”.

Any writing or reading of blog posts in those days I could only do in brief snatches of time. While waiting with a family member in a doctor’s waiting room, standing in line at a supermarket check out or on my way to a social commitment — I used to write on my phone. If you call blog posts writing then I agree with today’s quote.

Around three years ago I began to work on a lifelong dream. Since I was five years old, I have wanted to write a book.

The idea for my novel is there. I have the plot figured out . I thought I would write it piecemeal like I do my blog posts but I haven’t gone beyond a couple of chapters. Some things, it seems, cannot be written on the go.

Working moms and dads have been known to write books by waking up 2 or 3 hours before their kids. I did that too when I was younger and working on a thesis. It is something I can’t manage anymore. For novel writing I would tend to disagree with today’s quote.

We have veteran bloggers as well as some writing professionals in our blogging community. I would welcome their suggestions as they discuss this quote.

  1. I’m the opposite, before I started blogging, I found it difficult to write short stories because I saw a longer story in my head. I find writing by hand helps me focus. I don’t worry about editing until I have the whole narrative down. I tend to use inspiration from word prompts. Do what is right for you, not what is right for other writers.

  2. Here are my thoughts: https://sparksfromacombustiblemind.wordpress.com/2022/07/25/blogging-insights-nf-47-7-25-2022/ I do believe that writing (a novel) takes some serious time ‘in the trenches’ and so don’t be too harsh on yourself that you’ve only got a couple of chapters written. Your life appears to still be pretty busy, and there are priorities. When it’s time, I believe you’ll find the time. Interesting post today Tanya! I always enjoyed E.B. White.

  3. For what it is worth, you must find the optimal conditions for yourself when writing. Personally, I do best around 5 am, sitting outside with a coffee – assuming I feel inspired. Bright ideas and inspiration hit me at the oddest times, at work, duing a meal, in the shower…. When it happens I go with it.
