Blogging Insights NF # 61 – Distraction

TODAY’S QUOTE

“Being a good writer is 3% talent, 97% not being distracted by the internet.”

MY THOUGHTS

Today’s quote reminds me of one of my father’s favourite quotes :

” Genius is 1 % inspiration, and 99 % perspiration.”

Maybe today’s quote is an updated version of this older one. Genius or inspiration has been upgraded to 3 %. You can equate ‘staying off the Internet’ with hard work.

Arguably, writers need to research and these days that involves the Internet. However, it is so easy to fall down rabbit holes like Instagram or other social media. Before you know it, precious writing time is over.

My daughter has set a 15 minute timer on her Instagram. I think it would be a good idea if I did the same.

      2. I’m caught up in a lot of family stuff which is very important but is not letting me get on with my writing even when I have the time.
        I sometimes wish I could go on a week’s holiday somewhere quiet and picturesque. I would spend my time writing and would go for walks when I got tired.

  2. With the shear and overwhelming amount of information(good, bad and useless) instantaneously available to anyone with an internet connection….distraction is sure to follow.

    How easy is it as you say to “fall down the rabbit hole” on some social media platform and then “wake up” and wonder where the past hour or more has gone.

      Sorry for not visiting your blog in a long while. I’ve been caught up in a lot of stuff for the past two years. It’s an effort just keeping my own blog going.

      1. Thanks Tanya. Not sure if you knew, but we moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada back in July. I’m sort of semi-retired. But, the move does put us within 2 hours now of our daughter, versus a full week of holidays it took before.

        With more time availanle now, I find it easier to keep on top(kind of) of my section of the blogging world.

        Hope you are well. I’ll stop in more often now.

      3. Thanks Tanya…and yes this area is perfect for getting outdoors and hiking and such. We live in an area that has the highest tides in the world. A 5 or 7 minute walk to the end of our road puts us right at the ocean. So, just about anyplace you can access the ocean at low tide, provides a great opportunity to walk along the ocean floor. And yes, being now only 2 hours by car from our daughter is wonderful.

  10. Just to be contrary, sometimes a bit of procrastination is useful, and internet rabbit holes offer new ideas. My writing over the summer was patchy because of other commitments, and I though that the WIP was bogged down because of that. As I now realise, it was stuck because it had hit a problem and once I got back in to it a month or two back I spent a lot of time losing myself elsewhere whilst failing to get back on track, but all that procrastination brought me round to a solution that I might not otherwise have thought of.

    (On the flip side, one advantage of the summer for writing is that I tend to work outside, too far from the house for the laptop to connect to the wifi.)
